What to Wear to Your Session: The Honest Guide for Every Type
Styling questions are hands down the thing I get asked about most. So here is the real, practical answer for every type of session I offer.
Maternity
Soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully. Cream, blush, sage, dusty blue, warm taupes. These are timeless and flattering on every skin tone. Avoid anything neon or very bright: it casts colour onto your skin and draws the eye away from your bump.
For style, flowy maxi dresses are a go-to for good reason. They give the bump room to breathe, they move beautifully in photos, and they look soft and feminine without trying too hard. A fitted bodysuit with a flowing skirt, a soft wrap, or even a sports bra with an open linen shirt and jeans can all look stunning.
If you are shooting in the studio, you are welcome to borrow from the studio wardrobe. Get in touch before your session to see what is available.
Newborn: for parents
This one is simple: wear something soft, neutral, and comfortable. White, cream, taupe, blush, soft grey. You want the focus on the baby, not your outfit, so keep it clean and simple. A flowy dress for mum, a plain linen shirt and jeans for dad. Avoid logos, bold patterns, or anything too structured.
And dress in layers: the studio is kept warm for baby, which means you will be warm too.
Child portraiture
Comfort first, always. A child who is uncomfortable in their outfit will tell you, and it will show in the photos. Simple, neutral pieces in soft tones work best. Bring a couple of outfit changes so we can mix things up mid-session. Bare feet are always a lovely touch in studio sessions.
Avoid cartoon characters, large logos, and anything too fussy. The goal is for the outfit to frame the child, not compete with them.
Family
Start with mum's outfit and build everyone else around it. You are aiming to coordinate, not match. Pick two or three colours and work from there. Soft neutrals with one slightly richer tone: sage and cream, blush and tan, dusty blue and white: always look cohesive without looking like you tried too hard.
Linen, cotton, and soft knits photograph beautifully. Avoid very shiny fabrics and anything too stiff. And please, lay everything out on a bed together before the session and take a photo: if something jumps out, swap it before the day.
