Studio vs Outdoor Maternity Sessions: Which One Is Right for You?
One of the most common questions I get from maternity clients is whether to shoot in the studio or outside. The honest answer is that both are beautiful, and both produce completely different results. Here is a breakdown to help you decide.
Studio sessions
The studio is a controlled environment, which sounds clinical but is actually a really good thing when you are heavily pregnant. The lighting is consistent, the temperature is comfortable, there are gowns and props available, and nothing depends on the weather. You can arrive, get settled, and know exactly what you are walking into.
Studio maternity sessions tend to produce images that are soft, timeless, and a little more intimate. Flowing gowns, draped fabric, clean backgrounds. The kind of images that look beautiful printed large on a wall.
They are also the better option if you are feeling a bit self-conscious. There is something about the controlled, private environment of a studio that helps people relax in a way that standing in a park does not always allow.
Outdoor sessions
Outdoor sessions have a completely different energy. They feel more natural, more personal, and more tied to a place that is genuinely yours. If you have a favourite location that means something to you: a park you walk through every morning, the beach you got engaged at, somewhere that feels like yours: that translates into the images in a way a studio simply cannot replicate.
Golden hour outdoor sessions in particular are hard to beat. The light is soft, everything looks warm and beautiful, and the surroundings add a context that tells your story.
The trade-off is that outdoor sessions are weather dependent, which is why I offer rescheduling at no extra cost if the weather turns. They also require a bit more thought about what to wear since you are working with a real environment rather than a neutral background.
So which one should you choose?
If you want something timeless, intimate, and styled, go studio. If you want something warm, personal, and location-specific, go outdoor. If you genuinely cannot decide, I am always happy to chat it through before you book.
