The Best Locations for Outdoor Family Sessions in South East Queensland

One of the things I love about shooting in South East Queensland is that we are genuinely spoiled for outdoor locations. From city parks to hinterland forests to coastal stretches, there is something for every family and every aesthetic.

Here are some of my favourites.

New Farm Park, Brisbane

One of my most used locations and for good reason. Beautiful old fig trees, open grassy areas, river views, and enough variety to give you multiple looks within a single session. It also works at almost any time of day, though golden hour here is particularly stunning.

South Bank Parklands, Brisbane

Great for families who want a bit of city backdrop mixed with greenery. The parklands have lots of different pockets: some lush and garden-like, others with the city skyline behind. Works especially well for larger family groups who need a bit more space.

Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens

Lush, green, and incredibly varied. You can go from a tropical section to an open lawn to a Japanese garden all within walking distance. Beautiful light filtering through the canopy and a generally peaceful atmosphere that helps families relax.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs

For families who want something a bit more dramatic. City views, golden light bouncing off the river, and the cliffs themselves as a backdrop. Works beautifully at golden hour.

Wynnum Foreshore

A slightly lesser-known option but one of my favourites for a coastal feel without the crowds of the Gold Coast. The foreshore has a lovely relaxed feel, beautiful light over the water, and a long stretch to work with.

Gold Coast Hinterland: Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook

For families who want something lush, green, and a little different. Rainforest backdrops, waterfalls, and incredible natural light. Worth the drive for something truly special.

Noosa National Park, Sunshine Coast

The coastal walks and bush backdrops here are stunning. Best suited to adventurous families who do not mind a bit of walking. The combination of ocean, bush, and golden light is hard to beat.
